Course Description

Compliance Management for Confined Field Trials course, offered in partnership with CropLife Canada, provides participants with the latest information on how to conduct a confined field trial for a plant with a novel trait (PNT).

The course is open to members and non-members of CropLife Canada and participants receive all the information needed to apply for and complete a confined field trial, as well as forms to help track information and keep records throughout the field trial. The course is available online through the University of Saskatchewan. Confined field trials are required as part of the regulatory process for a plant with a novel trait (PNT) to enable developers to evaluate, under safe conditions, the field requirements of a PNT and to collect information to address the environmental safety criteria necessary for potential commercialization. Typically a trial involves monitoring a research-phase PNT for three to four years to determine if it will meet the standards of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The confined field course details all of the CFIA’s requirements to help researchers properly conduct their trials as well as how to keep required forms and records.
