The Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS) education programs is facilitated through the Canadian Fetal Health Surveillance Steering Committee (C FHS SC) to meet the need for evidence-based, interprofessional education in fetal health surveillance.

Target Audience

Family physicians, midwives, nurses, obstetricians and students / residents in these disciplines.

 

Course Outline

The FHS Fundamental Workshops and FHS Refresher Workshop consists of three components:

  1. Pre-study of the C FHS SC "Fundamentals of Fetal Health Surveillance Online Manual" accessed through the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine - Division of Continuing Professional Development.
  2. Successful completion of the Fundamentals FHS Online Exam  following review of the Online Manual. More information is provided following registration into the courses. The cost of the Canadian FHS online exam is $30.00 CDN and is not included in the cost of the workshop. Employees of health regions may have access to institutionally purchased log-on codes at a reduced cost.
  3. Participation at a FHS interprofessional workshop, virtual or in-person, with a focus on integrating knowledge to clinical practice through interactive cases in intermittent auscultation and electronic fetal monitoring.

Learner Outcomes

At the conclusion of the FHS Fundamentals Workshop, participants will:

  • Describe the Canadian recommendations for fetal health surveillance during labour.
  • Identify the definitions, characteristics, etiology, physiology/pathophysiology of IA, intrapartum EFM and NST findings.
  • Apply FHS classification and interpretation to IA, intrapartum EFM and NST findings within the whole clinical picture for decision making.
  • Describe the appropriate clinical management/response for prevention and/or correction of abnormal IA, atypical/abnormal intrapartum EFM and NST findings.
  • Describe antenatal surveillance techniques including fetal movement counting, NST, and biophysical profile.
  • Discuss teamwork, communication and documentation as they relate to fetal health surveillance and perinatal outcomes.
