CMEP 01T - Acute Care of At-Risk Newborns

Target Audience
Health care providers providing newborn care such as licensed or regulated health care professionals (or students) such as physicians, nurses, midwifes, respiratory therapists or paramedics.
Course Outline
The ACoRN: Acute Care of At-Risk Newborn Program provides health care professionals with the knowledge and skills of newborn resuscitation and stabilization, assessment and management of the at-risk or ill newborn. This workshop utilizes a systematic approach embedded into simulation based education and debriefing to support a multidisciplinary team-based approach to care. In Canada, the ACoRN Education Program is administered by the Canadian Paediatric Society.
The ACoRN Program key components include:
- The ACoRN Textbook and ACoRN Essentials Guide
- Needs assessment facilitated by Maternal and Children’s Provincial Program
- Individual self-assessment with completion of the ACoRN Online Exam prior to the workshop
- Interactive Workshop
- Evaluation
- National and provincial approach
Learner Outcomes
At the conclusion of the ACoRN Provider Course, participants will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of concepts and skills of neonatal resuscitation and stabilization in the management of the at-risk or ill newborn.
- Illustrate knowledge and skills with the effective use of the ACoRN systematic process and management of the at-risk or ill newborn.
- Through multidisciplinary simulations and debriefing, integrate a systematic approach to gather and organize information, establish priorities, and intervene for care of the newborn.
- Practice team work and communication skills for effective collaboration within an interdisciplinary team.
Participants must complete the ACoRN online exam prior to the in-person interactive workshop. The workshop focuses on the application of knowledge to clinical practice through use of the ACoRN sequences including the Core Steps and Level of Risk assessment.
