Description

This learning activity introduces pharmacists who are in the process of being licensed in Saskatchewan to the policies and bylaws that guide the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacy Professionals (SCPP) Prescribing Authority Framework.

SCPP Prescriptive Authority Level I Basics Training is accredited by USask CPE for 2.5 CEUs.

Learner Outcomes

  1. Identify how to apply the 9 discrete Level I prescribing authority activities in practice, including explaining the rules that apply to all prescribing and rules that are specific to each discrete activity.
  2. Recognize situations in which pharmacists are authorized to prescribe at the outset, situations where dispensing options are to be reasonably exhausted before prescribing, and situations in which there are no options available within prescribing framework.
  3. Explain the expectations around collaborating with practitioners when dispensing and prescribing drugs.
  4. Explain the notification expectations when prescribing drugs under each discrete Level I  prescribing activity.
  5. Explain the multiple function of the PAR, and the expectations for its use under Level I prescribing authority (i.e. as a clinical record, an assessment tool, and a communication tool).
  6. Explain the meaning of definitions relevant to prescribing authority.
  7. Explain what Bylaw requirements apply to pharmacists prescribing within or through a public institution program or service (e.g. Saskatchewan Health Authority, Saskatchewan Cancer Agency) as opposed to a private setting (e.g. community pharmacy).
