UCPE 01H - Privacy Officer Course
Description
This program has been developed to ensure privacy officers (participants) understand their obligations and responsibilities under PIPEDA and HIPA. This course now comprises much-updated information to the training on special issues that have arisen since the first training sessions were presented.
The course is accredited by USask CPE for 3.0 CEUs.
To comply with the SCPP bylaw that:
- Every community pharmacy must have a privacy officer that is either the pharmacy manager or another licensed pharmacist from the pharmacy designated by the pharmacy manager.
- The designated privacy officer be initially trained and thereafter undertake periodic re-certification training; and
- The pharmacy manager regularly reports who the privacy officer is and the initial and re-certification training received.
Therefore, the purpose of this session is to provide both initial training to new privacy officers as well as to recertify current privacy officers to ensure that the level of expertise exists in every pharmacy is in compliance with the bylaw requirements. It is primarily directed to every pharmacy manager, or licensed pharmacist designated by the pharmacy manager as the privacy officer for the pharmacy. Other pharmacists or pharmacy officials interested in privacy issues may also attend.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Understand the shared roles and obligations in the community pharmacy (proprietor, manager, privacy officer, and employees) in safeguarding the privacy of individuals' Personal Health Information.
- Understand the roles of the SCPP and OIPC, in safeguarding the privacy of individuals' Personal Health Information.
- Understand Privacy legislation as it relates to community pharmacies and safeguarding the privacy of individuals' Personal Health Information. (i.e., HIPA, HIPR, PIPEDA).
- Apply practical strategies in the Privacy Officer role to ensure compliance in line with privacy legislation and SCPP bylaws.
- Handle Privacy Breaches and Patient Complaints in the Community Pharmacy.
- Implement patient confidentiality safeguards for the collection, use, and disclosure of PHI.
