The USask Continuing Pharmacy Education (UCPE) program has worked with the SK Prevention Institute to create two accredited online courses providing a comprehensive overview of HIV for Saskatchewan healthcare and allied professionals. HIV 101 covers the epidemiology, pathology, stages of infection, transmission, harm reduction initiatives, and more. HIV Treatment provides the medication and treatment options in more detail. Upon registration, you receive access to both courses.

This is an online course.

Accreditation:

  • HIV 101 is USask CPE accredited for 3.5 hours (CEUs)
  • HIV Treatment is USask CPE accredited for 2.5 hours (CEUs)

Target Audience: Saskatchewan healthcare and allied professionals.

Saskatchewan residents can use the code SKPHAR to register for this course for free.

Learner Outcomes

Learner Outcomes for HIV 101

  1. Describe the unique Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemiology in Saskatchewan and explain what contributes to the difference in HIV epidemiology in Saskatchewan compared to the rest of Canada. 
  2. Recognize and address myths and misconceptions that contribute to the stigmatization of HIV and discrimination of individuals living with HIV. 
  3. Explain ‘HIV Care Continuum and define the role of a health care and allied professionals within the ‘HIV Care Continuum’. 
  4. Discuss general HIV pathology, stages of infection, and progression of HIV to AIDS. 
  5. Explain transmission of HIV and discuss measures and harm reduction initiatives that are effective in preventing the transmission of HIV. 
  6. Describe the basics of HIV testing in Saskatchewan and identify “The Three C’s” when discussing HIV testing with clients.
  7. Discuss HIV treatment, adherence to treatment, and monitoring of therapy. 

Learner Outcomes for HIV Treatment

  1. Explain the concept of drug resistance & understand the importance of resistance testing. 
  2. Identify the 4 main antiretroviral drug classes & where in the viral replication process they exert their effect. 
  3. Understand the characteristics of each of these classes & their place in therapy, including identifying different drug regimens & the need for specific combinations. 
  4. Explain different considerations that need to be addressed prior to initiating treatment. 
  5. Explain the goals of therapy & the importance of viral suppression. 
  6. Describe patient readiness & what role you as a health care provider plays in it. 
  7. Understand adherence, barriers to adherence & identify strategies to improve adherence.
