CMEP 01D - AIMS-SK: Substance Use Disorders Interactive Workshop
Course Description
We invite you to enhance your understanding and skills at our dynamic and interactive learning environment. The objective of this learning day is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s journey in identifying and treating substance use disorders (SUD). Utilizing engaging case studies, we will incorporate various elements of the current AIMS-SK curriculum while fostering interdisciplinary discussion and reflection among participants.
Our structured approach, centered around these case studies, will create a dynamic and interactive learning environment. By incorporating diverse learning modalities, we aim to reinforce key curriculum concepts and promote critical thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration in the care of patients with SUD.
During the workshop, you will actively participate in discussions, sharing your insights and perspectives from your professional role. We will emphasize identifying unique insights and exploring interdisciplinary approaches to patient care. The committee is currently finalizing a selection of compelling cases and assembling a multi-disciplinary panel of professionals to facilitate discussions for each case study.

Overall Learning Objectives for Case-Based Learning Day
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Analyze patient information to assess and advocate for suitable harm reduction and treatments, such as Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT), tailored to the needs and circumstances of individuals with a substance use disorder.
- Formulate and evaluate patient-centered treatment plans for initiating and maintaining OAT, considering best practices and interdisciplinary inputs while addressing potential challenges and solutions.
- Identify gaps in the continuity of care during transitions between community, correctional, or acute care settings and formulate strategies to enhance care continuity, thereby reducing the risk of relapse.
- Assess the complexities presented by co-morbid conditions in SUD cases, such as pregnancy or concurrent disorders, and develop integrated, comprehensive treatment approaches that consider multi-disciplinary perspectives and modalities.
