This module will review SCPP policies, standards, and guidelines for pharmacists in accessing, using, interpreting, ordering, and performing medical laboratory tests. This course is a mandatory requirement for pharmacists to participate in some activities. Please review SCPP's Training and Development table for more information.
Learner Outcomes

Describe the three regulatory frameworks which govern pharmacist and pharmacy laboratory activities in Saskatchewan.

Define the terms relevant to laboratory tests and medical devices and how they apply in practice.

Describe foundational principles of laboratory activities, including communication and collaboration with other health care providers, informed consent, documentation and follow-up.

Understand the role of the pharmacy manager, as the qualified professional, when their pharmacy holds a laboratory licence, as well as additional responsibilities when pharmacists are ordering or performing tests.

Develop a working knowledge of the pharmacist’s scope of practice to access, use, interpret, order and perform laboratory tests, and how to apply it in their practice setting (i.e. public vs. private).

Explain the sale and distribution of medical testing devices, including requirements for the device, roles of pharmacy team members, and impact of the three regulatory frameworks.
